Sex Therapy

In a lot of ways, sex therapy is similar to traditional talk therapy, but oftentimes the presenting concern or topics in session are related to sex or intimacy. Sex therapy is a highly specialized form of talk therapy. It does not involve nudity or sexual contact between therapist and clients.

Sex therapy is a confidential space to unpack feelings, identify unhelpful patterns, clarify beliefs, or discuss problems that are causing distress or keeping you stuck. Maybe you’re seeking accurate information, or maybe you need compassion; a space to talk freely without feeling judged or shamed.

Using evidence-based therapy practices and extensive trainings in human sexuality, the goal is to create a relationship to your sexuality that feels healthy, positive, and authentic to you.

Sex therapy involves treatment of concerns related to low sexual desire, arousal, differences in desire within a relationship, sexual pain, difficulty with orgasm, premature ejaculation, and erectile difficulties. Therapy can also address sexual shame, fantasies, anxieties, compulsive sexual behavior (e.g., porn/sex addiction), dating, confidence, and psychosexual education.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy offers a structured and compassionate space for relationships struggling with communication, connection, conflict, or issues around sex. Therapy may also be beneficial for couples looking to be proactive, and strengthen their relationship with tools and communication skills to promote positive growth and maintain intimacy in a long term relationship.

Healthy relationships depend on more than good communication—they also require emotional safety and a fulfilling intimate connection. Sexual problems are incredibly common in relationships, yet the majority of relationship therapists aren’t trained in sex therapy. One in five married couples and one in every three long-term partnerships experience a sexual relationship that is entirely absent, avoided, or unfulfilling (McCarthy, 2015). Why? Relationship and emotional problems may cause sexual issues, or sexual issues may impact the emotional connection. Sex may be accompanied by anxieties, body insecurities, unrealistic expectations, embarrassment, unasked questions, and a general discomfort with communicating about sex.

By blending the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and sex therapy, couples strengthen their friendship, create a more secure emotional bond, and address the sexual concerns that often reflect—and influence—the health of the relationship as a whole.

Couples therapy can address issues such as:

  • Desire differences
  • Improving communication and comfort around sexuality
  • Sexual avoidance in the relationship
  • Enhancing intimacy
  • Navigating conflict
  • Sex after life changes (e.g., becoming parents, post-illness, menopause)
  • Restoring trust after infidelity
  • Premarital counseling
